Thinky's Guide to Live Music in Singapore
live music in singapore

Watching live gigs by wannabe rockers in all manners of anarchic behaviour on the streets has become more commonplace these days. Nothing beats the live music experience where you can tell whether a band actually rocks... or just sucks.

Fortunately, if you take live music back to the pubs and nightspots that showcase them, you'll find many bands that have gained a strong following over the years. These musicians often come with a whole load of experience, explaining their richness of repertoire and technical expertise. Certainly no cringe-worthy bands here.

Enjoying the live music experience also includes having a great atmosphere - an appreciative crowd, comfortable seats (how many hours can you party on your feet?) and great drinks. So, we've compiled a list of live music venues so you "jazz funk rock soul pop whatever" lovers may finally find the perfect spot to indulge in drinks and a mean gig. Bring on the aural pleasure so close, you can almost feel the vibratos from the singer's throat.

Wednesday night's "unplugged" sessions always deliver up a great show, but any other night of the week is worth checking out this cool bar located in an old Peranakan shop house.

Once a gem in Singapore's nightlife circuit, after rebranding from Bar None to Bar:One, they forgot to re-install the vibe and have settled into the routine of a so-so house band as a backdrop to popping open any one of their great bottle specials and drinking with friends. Tue-Sun: 10.30pm, the music starts like clockwork.

Live music almost every night of the week, with a great rotation of bands. Even without the music this is a sensory experience. Bali lane itself is striking - sitting low across the green below the fantasy of Parkview Square. This particular joint is next to what looks like an artists studio spilling out into the street. The cafe itself is open and inviting. A mixture of furniture provides a variety of options for your weary butt. There's even a sculpted velour chaise lounge whose fingers stretch up drawing attention to the ceiling and it's menagerie of decorative lampshade cum mobiles. This place is boho with a little psycadelia: reds, pinks, feathers, shiny - mixed in with some classic design and ethnic pieces. There's a variety of drinks and eats to add to the seduction of the senses. Menu highlights include Affogato, involving espresso shot and ice cream, as well as premium Belgium export Duval at only 10 dollars. You can get your basics here too: lattes, iced teas and fruit juices. Food wise we've got cakes to go with coffee, as well as more substantial offerings.

At Brix, from Monday through Saturday 7.15pm, and on Sundays at 9.30pm the house band Energy delivers on their promise of their name with a great mix of rock, pop and Top 40s hits. Monday through Saturday at 9.30pm Earth Beat out of Canada take it up a notch with even more. Centrally located, they have a great band, Los Cabaleros, performing sultry Latin hits from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am every Sunday, and is quite popular with Salsa dancers.

Regulars will attest to the cosy and friendly atmosphere Crazy Elephant provides for listening to live music. The music of choice here are jazz and blues, helmed by resident bands the Bill Brothers, who play on Monday and Thursdays, and the Blues Machine, who play on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, both after 10 pm. The bands, a mix of locals and expatriates, have garnered a strong following in their years at Crazy Elephant and play a range of good ol' covers.

Sundays are reserved for spontaneous jam sessions with Curtis King and the Blues Machine. Local bands are also invited to play, like Ugly in the Morning who performed during the New Year. Remind them to tell you about the luminaries who've graced Crazy Elephant. These include Robbie Wiliams, Eric Burdon and the Animals, and even REM and Deep Purple!
