Back in the day Blondie teetered between sublime and stupid. Even on sci-r new-wave anthems like Atomic Debbie Harry sang lines like "Your Hair is Beautiful". That's why they were so cool. But the only bright spot on their reunion album is the Henri Mancini inspired shuffle Out in the Streets, possibly because it's the only song where Blondie's once impeccable taste in schtick matches their talent for creating it. Elsewhere, their attempts at ska and hip-hop, and the bombastic mess of the title track which features a perfunctory rap from Coolio and an organ riff straight out of Phantom of the Opera are funny strange, rather than funny funny. But despite this wildly uneven album, I'm glad they're back. Believe me, it could have been worse. Here's hoping their next effort ditches the marketing strategies and follows the true beat of their plastic hearts.
