Perhaps the last of the Robert Plant style rock vocalists to resist becoming an anachronism, the long awaited solo offering from Soundgarden's (yes, they are back together!) head introvert shows a lot more vulnerability and deftness than he has shown with the double barrel attack of his cohorts. Tributes to the late Jeff Buckley and a homage to Tom Waits highlight a collection of mid tempo numbers that are complimented by the stadium rock tricks while resisting the temptation to get all leathery. It's big, boy/girl at the end of the world themed which if you're feeling a bit sentimental for some real songwriting again after all the vocoder tinged soundbites on the dance floor, hits all the right spots. The French version of the single "Can't Change Me'" is absolutely hysterical with its accordion barrage and strange alliteration, happily resolving all the melancholy and drama of the previous 12 tracks. Oh yeah, great bedroom fodder.
