| GAY DAD Leisure Noise |
After the hype, here's Gay Dad's straight-laced songs. The wonderfully manufactured debate in the popular music press re: Gay Dad means that many more people hold an (often passionate) opinion about them than their music would seem to merit. Yes, everything about them seems to have been painstakingly planned in advance, first by a journalist and his media-savvy mates, then by a committee of marketing specialists. And yes, it comes off as contrived, fake and watered down as a consequence. OK. But the strategies behind most modern pop bands are infinitely more calculating and callous. The 'real' problem - and it's an obvious problem - is that their music is such a worryingly busy hybrid of so many '60s and '70s references that the songs themselves fall over simply trying to maintain their balance. Because it's simply not possible to combine Aerosmith, Mott The Hoople, and Fleetwood Mac, and the kitchen sink without compromising them all. And what's left is all a bit, Diet Coke, Petra Ultra Lights, alcohol free beer and Nescafe decaffeinated - in short, lifeless and safe. And that's the last thing a band who called themselves 'Gay Dad' should ever have been. Last update: 20-11-2008 12:25
