Heard of Frontal Labs? Uhhh a pharmaceutical firm? Join Gashaus as we unmask this local happening outfit!
N avigating through the Frontal Labs site (www.frontallabs.com) is like peering through a kaleidoscope - your eyes are presented with a whole swirling world of eye candy till it can get dizzying (or perhaps for some, more pumped up!) This is probably the desired effect 'cos which other SG site can offer you a more comprehensive look at the clubbing scene in town? Especially the DJ's arena, a calendar round-up of all party events with cool reviews / previews and pictures to boot, a shot at contests to win special party invites AND on top of that, participate in music forums, be clued in to the latest gadgets plus tune in to web radio! Formed in 1999, the members were grappling with NS life then and Frontal Labs, their pet project, gave them reason to wake up every morning.?One of the pioneers, Feng said, "All of us were aspiring DJs trying to break into the scene but being green and keen, we weren't taken seriously. We thought we might as well start our own magazine and try to get into clubs more often. But with the paltry NS allowance we had, an online mag was the more practical idea." ? And Feng admitted that their name was conceived through their tongue-in-cheek, fun-loving personalities and jested that it is quite an open secret that theirs is a "porn" site. Well, I guess this could be attributed to the fact that the site is splashed with heavenly bodies of clubbers like the Zoukers haunting the recent Halloween Gathering grounds, etc! Their latest offering is a DJ Academy, comprised of a two-week Basic DJ Workshop to equip aspiring DJs or those pursuing DJ-ing as a hobby, with essential technical skills and industry knowledge.?A more advanced course would be the month-long Essential DJ Course that includes learning how to work the turntable like a pro, field trips to clubs, creating your own demos, and both classes conducted by experienced DJs. A quick check on previous Frontal reports reflected pretty lofty albeit admirable ambitions which spell good news for music lovers, DJs and clubbers alike. "As an independent dance organization, Frontal is always looking out for people who want to help promote the music scene. We hope to collaborate with music and related organizations, in being a platform for sharing resources which would help all parties attain their objectives. In addition to having the pleasure of meeting up with new like-minded people, we'd like to open talks on several project ideas (music zine / website / radio show) and add a new dimension to Singapore's Art and Socio-Culture." When asked what they have achieved, Feng replied, "We got people more interested in the electronic music scene here. Threw a couple of kickass parties such as the Frontal Islandwide Tour and showed everyone that 7 kids could put 2 records together as well as any other $50K-a-night DJs. Oh, we also got some groupies." They are currently busy trying to convey deejaying to the masses - collaborating with numerous organisations to bring the art of deejaying out to more people and more places and planning a site revamp for mid 2006. And what would be Feng's take on the clubbers and DJs here? "It's fantastic now but people still need to loosen up even more, and no amount of bartop dancing will change that. They just need to be comfortable with expressing themselves. A couple of other things I can think of would be more variety, and more niche clubs or nights. As for DJs, they are definitely on par in terms of technical excellence. Look at our rep for DMC World this year, DJ Rattle. He placed in the SEMIS and beat out at least 10 other turntablists from around the world. Then you have the wonderkid, DJ Nico, who's barely 17 but already popping eyeballs out there. Before signing off, Feng had this line of advice for aspiring DJs: Have no shame and have more originality! |
