Enough lamenting about the local music scene already because obviously you haven't been around much to realise that our local acts lack not the talent, but rather appreciation from the public. Music it seems, is subjective...
To some, rock is noise, and others think classical is for wimps. Well, pass whatever judgment you want people because right now, with such a gem that's causing a storm on our little island, everyone's stopping and sitting up to listen...
That's because the noise-makers are here to stay and they come in the form of a 13-strong band that calls themselves Wicked Aura. They're not really wicked but boy is their music w-i-c-k-e-d.
The 'noise' they make melds well together and forms upbeat melodies also known as samba funk, or wicked reggae as they call it. This percussion band of Brazilian beats and pure soul are so funky that you'll have a hard time trying not to move to the beat.
They used to busk along Orchard Road and have since come a long way. Not only have they performed at Zoukout 2003, they also played at the International Latin Festival and opened for The Black Eyed Peas at the Indoor Stadium. Last year was jam packed for them.
But they got the exposure they needed to propel them to greater things including an international performance in Hong Kong at the HK Jockey Club Street Carnival 2004.
This talented bunch of inspiring musicians has also played at WOMAD Singapore and at the NYE celebrations. Next up is a performance at the upcoming Chingay parade, happening on the 18 and 19 of February. Having got together only in 2003, the band is already making an indelible mark on everyone's aural senses.
Some describe their music to be groovy and hyper, and easy to boogie to. The band is really made up of an interesting mix of personalities that range from a fire-twirler to a Malay teacher, a French guy and an ex-rugby player. Each of them plays an important role, and who knows where they'll be in the near future.
Meanwhile, do check them out at their website www.wickedaura.com and sample some of their rocking good music!
